Army detains sgt. suspected of training criminals in Buxton

A sergeant in the Guyana Defence Force, who is reportedly accused of training criminals in tactical manoeuvres in the troubled village of Buxton , has been detained by the army.

Military police arrested the soldier on December 23, and they are still questioning him. The man was reportedly picked up in Buxton along with his months-old baby that day. Both were reportedly taken to Camp Ayanganna .

Army sources close to the investigation confirmed that the sergeant is still in custody. It is believed that over time the soldier used his skills and training to teach military tactics to several gang members in areas aback of Buxton and Friendship villages.

Kaieteur News understands that the soldier had been trained in Brazil , among other places.

Efforts to contact the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) for a comment yesterday afternoon proved futile.

AK- 47 rifle

The arrest of the soldier comes after news of the recent disappearance of a missing AK-47 rifle. The Base Commander at Camp Ayanganna has been removed, and senior officials have been disciplined. The gun has not been recovered as yet.

Two years ago, 30 AK-47 assault rifles went missing. Less than half that number has been recovered, while the remainder is believed to be in the hands of criminals.

The GDF is also reportedly grappling with a large number of soldiers going “absent without official leave” (AWOL).

Recently, the army announced it was going after these soldiers.
